Flap discs for metal, steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous metals from Tyrolit – for angle grinders, available in a wide range of grit sizes and featuring innovative technologies such as CERABOND X and FASTCUT.
Anyone deburring steel, grinding weld seams or finishing stainless steel surfaces needs a tool that combines performance with ease of use. This is precisely the standard that Tyrolit sets for its range of flap discs. As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of abrasives, we develop and produce flap discs that are a step ahead in terms of removal rate, service life and user-friendliness – for professional use in angle grinders.
The product range is aimed at commercial users in the metalworking industry, in the steel and plant construction as well as in the trades: whether surface grinding on structural steel, edge grinding on high-alloy stainless steel or deburring non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper or brass. Tyrolit has a suitable flap disc for each of these requirements – across five quality ranges and featuring technologies such as CERABOND X, FASTCUT and LONGLIFE, which are the result of the company’s own research and development.
Tyrolit offers over 30 flap disc products across five quality ranges: ONE for a cost-effective entry-level option, BASIC for economical industrial applications, STANDARD for everyday use, PREMIUM for the highest performance requirements, and CERABOND X for the most demanding grinding applications.
The flap discs are available in outer diameters ranging from 100 to 178 mm – designed to fit standard angle grinders – and cover grit sizes from 40 (high stock removal) to 400 (finishing). Quick-Change Minidiscs in 50 and 75 mm are available for mini angle grinders. In addition to glass fibre backing bodies (shapes 27A/28A), Tyrolit also offers variants with trimmable plastic or natural fibre backing bodies, which allow 100 per cent utilisation of the abrasive cloth. Furthermore, the SOFTJOB variant with an offset lamella arrangement is available for hard-to-reach areas. Tyrolit also offers the following supplementary flexible abrasives: abrasive belts and fibre discs ready.
The choice of the right flap disc depends primarily on the material.
The 2-in-1 variants from the BASIC, STANDARD and PREMIUM ranges are suitable for steel and stainless steel (combined) – they can be used universally on both materials. Those working exclusively with stainless steel should opt for the PREMIUM CERAMIC: its ceramic grain ensures maximum material removal, cool grinding without discolouration of the workpiece, and consistent re-sharpening throughout its entire service life. For machining non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper, brass or bronze, Tyrolit recommends the special PREMIUM flap disc for non-ferrous metals: its specification prevents the smearing and dulling that is common with conventional discs. The ceramic grain promotes self-cleaning and self-sharpening of the disc during material removal.
The PREMIUM TWINFLAP D/C, which combines diamond grit and silicon carbide, is available for porcelain stoneware, tiles, ceramics, granite, marble, natural stone and glass. The Tyrolit guide explains which grinding tool is right for which application “The right grinding tool for your application”.
Tyrolit offers specialised solutions for the finishing of welded seams and edge grinding.
The PREMIUM OVERLAP, with 10 mm protruding flaps, is ideal for fillet welds, grooves and slots – where standard flap discs do not penetrate deep enough into the geometry. The PREMIUM FASTCUT delivers maximum material removal throughout its entire service life; its Top-Size coating prevents discolouration on the workpiece during start-up and saves on rework. Suitable for high-alloy steel and stainless steel as well as unalloyed and low-alloy steel. For a long service life when grinding edges, the PREMIUM LONGLIFE C-TRIM is recommended: compacted linen at the edge ensures stability, whilst the trimmable backing ensures that 100 per cent of the abrasive linen is utilised.
When it comes to flap discs, Tyrolit relies on three proprietary technologies, which deliver tangible performance benefits.
CERABOND X: CERABOND X flap discs achieve maximum material removal on various grades of steel and stainless steel. Ideally suited for flat grinding, edge grinding and the removal of weld seams. Grit size 40/60 for high material removal, grit size 80 for fine work.
FASTCUT: FASTCUT technology is designed for maximum material removal. The disc remains highly aggressive throughout its entire service life – whilst the aggressiveness of grinding tools typically decreases as wear increases, FASTCUT actively counteracts this. Thanks to the Top-Size coating, the disc runs cooler, which prevents discolouration on stainless steel.
LONGLIFE: Flap discs featuring LONGLIFE technology are characterised by an above-average service life, achieved through an increased number of closely spaced flaps. The LONGLIFE C-TRIM variant combines this with a trimmable backing for 100 per cent utilisation of the abrasive cloth.
With conventional flap discs featuring a glass-fibre backing, a portion of the abrasive cloth remains unused at the end of the service life, as the rigid backing cannot be further abraded. Trimmable variants solve this problem.
Tyrolit offers flap discs with a trimmable plastic backing (Type 28N) or a natural fibre backing (Type 28NF). The backing can be trimmed as required, exposing fresh abrasive cloth and allowing the disc to be used up completely. The result: 100 per cent utilisation of the abrasive cloth, a longer effective service life and lower tooling costs per metre ground. The PREMIUM LONGLIFE C-TRIM and CERABOND X flap discs feature this characteristic prominently. Find out more about trimmable flap discs and other FlexSolution innovations in the Tyrolit Blog.
A key difference lies in the level of vertical integration: Tyrolit manufactures the abrasive mesh for its flap discs in-house. This ensures complete control over the value chain – from the selection of raw materials to the finished product. The result is consistently high product quality, improved grinding performance and maximum process reliability – batch after batch.
Tyrolit has been in business for over 100 years and is one of the world’s leading companies in the abrasives industry. This expertise flows directly into product development: proprietary technologies such as CERABOND X, FASTCUT and LONGLIFE, a wide range across five quality lines, and uncompromising safety standards. Tyrolit abrasives meet the highest quality requirements and stand for reliability in day-to-day grinding operations.
