Fibre discs are flexible grinding tools that are fitted to an angle grinder and combine high material removal rates with good adaptability to the workpiece geometry. Their elastic backing ensures a uniform finish – even on slightly curved or irregular surfaces.
The Tyrolit range covers all standard grinding applications in the metalworking industry: from rough derusting and deburring, through the removal of weld seams, to the fine finishing of surfaces. The discs are suitable for steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, as well as – in the case of the BASIC range – for wood. With the correct product type and the appropriate grit size, Tyrolit fibre discs deliver consistent results with a long service life.
Fibre disc and flap disc both are used on an angle grinder, but differ fundamentally in their construction and areas of application. A fibre disc consists of a flat, flexible backing with abrasive grit applied to it – it is the tool of choice for high material removal rates: derusting, deburring, removing weld seams and coarse surface grinding. The flap disc, on the other hand, is made up of stepped abrasive flaps; it grinds more gently and produces a finer finish for surface finishing and intermediate grinding.
In short: fibre discs for removal and preparation, flap discs for finishing and final machining. If you wish to combine both in a single operation, choose the fibre disc with a fine grit (80–120) for the final finish.
The choice of the right product type depends on the material and the requirements. For steel and stainless steel, PREMIUM zirconia-alumina fibre discs (ZA) are the standard choice: zirconia-alumina is highly abrasive and durable, whilst the cooling layer prevents discolouration on stainless steel. For those requiring maximum stock removal on hard surfaces, the CERABOND X fibre disc with ceramic grit is the ideal choice – offering greater abrasiveness and a significantly longer service life.
For aluminium and non-ferrous metals, we recommend the BASIC A-B15V fibre disc based on aluminium oxide, which can also be used on wood. Quick-Change discs with ceramic grit and an abrasive-active top coat are designed for stainless steel and high-alloy steels – the additional coating actively cools the surface and prevents tarnishing.
Tyrolit fibre discs are available in three standard diameters: 115 mm, 125 mm and 180 mm – each with a 22 mm mounting bore, suitable for all standard angle grinders. The 115 and 125 mm discs are the most commonly used sizes for hand-held grinding work; the 180 mm disc is used for large-area applications. The BASIC range is also available in 100 mm.
For hard-to-reach areas and mini angle grinders, we offer Tyrolit Quick-Change discs in 51 mm and 76 mm. These can be changed without the need for assembly tools and are particularly suitable for deburring and rust removal work on components in confined spaces.
The backing material determines the mechanical properties of a fibre disc. The classic vulcanised fibre disc has a backing made of vulcanised fibre – robust, flexible and easy to machine. The natural fibre disc (PREMIUM ZA-P48 N) uses jute fibre: environmentally friendly, trimmable and heat-dissipating for a cooler cut.
The abrasive grain determines the performance class: zirconia corundum (ZA) is tough and aggressive on steel and stainless steel. Ceramic grain (CA) in the CERABOND X range is even sharper and renews its cutting edges through controlled grain break-off. Aluminium oxide (A) is the universal option for lighter materials and wood. All PREMIUM and CERABOND X fibre discs feature a cooling layer that limits heat build-up on the workpiece. For tubular or profiled workpieces, the following alternatives are available: grinding belts etc.
The CERABOND X fibre discs combine ceramic grain with a unique bonding system: the grain remains aggressive and sharp throughout its entire service life, whilst the cooling layer prevents tarnishing on sensitive materials. The PREMIUM ZA-P48 N Natural Fibre Discs with a jute fibre backing can be trimmed – this maintains a consistent removal rate from the start to the end of their service life.
The Quick-change discs in 51 and 76 mm allow for tool-free changing on the mini angle grinder for areas that cannot be reached with standard discs.
