The bond, abrasive grain and wheel topography change as the wheel wears, with direct effects on grinding forces, workpiece surface finish and geometric accuracy. To maintain optimum performance over the long term, grinding wheels require periodic redressing. This is precisely where Tyrolit's grinding wheel dressers come into play: they restore the cutting action of the wheel and ensure that the subsequent grinding process is significantly improved in terms of performance, cost-effectiveness and surface quality. Tyrolit covers the entire spectrum – from diamond and CBN wheels to conventional aluminium oxide and silicon carbide wheels – and offers the right dressing tool for every application.
Rotary dressing discs and diamond dressing plates are suitable for diamond and CBN grinding wheels, whilst single-point, multi-point and cluster-type dressers, as well as dressing sticks, are suitable for aluminium oxide and silicon carbide wheels. The reason lies in the hardness ratio: only a tool with the appropriate grain size and bond hardness can remove the respective abrasive grains gently yet effectively. For wide or delicate diamond and CBN wheels, narrow rotary dressing discs are the right choice; profiled diamond dressers are specifically designed for conventional profiled wheels in aluminium oxide or silicon carbide.
The Tyrolit range covers all applications and materials used in the dressing process: from discs for the rotary dressing of diamond and CBN tools, through to stationary diamond dressers for aluminium oxide and silicon carbide wheels, right through to dressing sticks and tubes for hand dressing. Rotary dressing discs for silicon carbide are available with a diameter of 75 mm, whilst those for diamond and CBN grinding wheels are available with diameters of 200 to 250 mm and widths of 12 or 20 mm. Hand dressing sticks are available in grit sizes from 120 to 600, suitable for bench grinding wheels up to 250 mm in diameter.
Stationary dressers are clamped securely into the grinding machine and deliver the highest repeatability; examples include diamond and CSS dressing plates, which are available in three diamond variants for standard, high and the highest precision requirements. Hand dressing tools – such as dressing sticks, tubes and single-point diamonds – offer flexibility and cost-effectiveness, particularly for use on bench grinders. For large-diameter resin-bonded grinding wheels, such as those commonly used in the foundry industry, Tyrolit also offers a hand dressing set with rotating steel rollers, which can be quickly and easily refitted using replacement rollers.
When dressing grinding wheels, two factors are particularly important: an adequate supply of coolant throughout the process, and the correct matching of the dresser's working width and overlap ratio to the grinding wheel. This is the only way to maintain consistently high levels of productivity and surface finish.
