Floor grinding and surface preparation involve different requirements – depending on whether a new concrete substrate is being prepared, an old floor covering is being refurbished or a natural stone floor is being polished. All three types of machine are used in floor finishing, but each covers different stages of the process. A floor grinder removes material using rotating diamond tools or grinding pads and is used for all stages from rough grinding to polishing – it is the key tool for concrete, natural stone and terrazzo. A floor milling machine works more aggressively: it removes coatings, cracks or uneven surfaces and is used to prepare the substrate before the actual grinding process begins. Tyrolit floor milling machines are available with electric or petrol engines. A floor stripper is, on the other hand, designed for removing floor coverings – carpet, vinyl, linoleum or directly bonded parquet. It operates with a horizontal blade and is the first step in renovation projects where an existing floor covering needs to be removed. The choice of machine depends primarily on the surface area and the application context. For Edge areas, stair surfaces and small rooms the FGE280M1, with a grinding width of 280 mm, is the right choice: a compact single-head floor grinder that can be dismantled without tools and is ready for immediate use thanks to its plug-and-play operation. For medium-sized surfaces For renovation or trade applications, the FGE400M1V, with a 400 mm sanding width and a 4 kW motor running on 400 V three-phase power, offers significantly higher sanding performance whilst retaining a similar level of compactness. Professional Large-scale applications are all covered by the FGE515M3V: 515 mm grinding width, optional 1- or 3-phase operation, innovative planetary gear concept for maximum uniformity and minimal maintenance. For very large surfaces – such as industrial halls, storage areas or public buildings – the FGE780 series floor grinders are designed for: up to 780 mm grinding width, available with a choice of 3 or 4 grinding discs, in self-propelled or remote-controlled versions. A professional floor-grinding result is achieved in several successive steps. First comes the substrate preparation: Depending on the condition of the floor, coatings or old floor coverings are removed using a floor milling machine or floor stripper, uneven areas are levelled out and, where necessary, surfaces are shot-blasted. In the first actual rough grinding stage Scratches, surface irregularities and discolouration are removed using metal-bonded diamond tools. This is followed by one or more intermediate grinding using progressively finer grinding tools, as well as filling cracks with filler. The process concludes with fine grinding and polishing using resin- or ceramic-bonded tools and grinding pads of varying grit sizes – right up to the desired surface finish. Yes – for professional floor grinding on construction sites, a high-performance extraction system is not an option, but a requirement. Concrete dust contains silica, which can cause silicosis if inhaled; occupational health and safety regulations in many countries therefore require H-class-compliant extraction for dry grinding. With its VCE series, Tyrolit offers its own extraction systems that are specifically designed to work with floor grinders. The VCE1200D (1.2 kW, single-phase) is the portable, lightweight entry-level model – equipped with a cyclone system, a conical pre-filter and an H13 HEPA filter, which captures 99.95 per cent of all particles ≥ 0.3 µm. The Longopac dust bag system enables dust-free, uninterrupted disposal. The VCE2400D (2.4 kW, single-phase) offers the same H-class certification and HEPA filtration with twice the suction power, making it suitable for larger machines and more intensive grinding applications. The FGE780R4 is the only fully remote-controlled floor grinder in the Tyrolit range. With a grinding width of 780 mm, four grinding discs with planetary drive and Radio Control, it is designed for large-scale renovation work where the operator does not need to walk directly behind the machine – for example, in dusty environments or over very long grinding distances. The integrated water tank also allows for a switch to wet grinding without the need for any modifications.
The FGE515M3V It stands out thanks to its exceptional flexibility in terms of power supply: it is the only floor grinder in the range that can be operated on both single-phase and three-phase power supplies – meaning it can also be used on building sites where three-phase power has not yet been installed. Its compact dimensions and removable components make it particularly easy to transport.
The extraction system VCE2400D deserves special mention as an often underestimated component: without H-class extraction, work cannot even begin on many construction sites. The VCE2400D, with its 2.4 kW power rating, reliably handles even high-power grinding machines.
