CERABOND X in a practical test: Maximum performance meets real craftsmanship requirements

Tyrolit promises with the further developed CERABOND X technology unprecedented performance and efficiency. Thanks to the exceptional combination of ceramic grain and innovative bond structure, the products score with high aggressiveness, maximum material removal and a long service life - without premature grain breakage.

How does CERABOND X perform in practice? We spoke to master metalworker Thomas Dobrinski to hear his expert take on our products. His conclusion is clear: "Significantly shorter working times, extremely high cost-effectiveness."

How do you like Tyrolit‘s CERABOND X products?

Thomas Dobrinski:

"The name made me think of James Bond for a moment. He always managed to elegantly free himself from even the most awkward of situations. It's the same with the CERABOND X system, consisting of cut-off wheels, rough grinding wheels, flap discs, fibre discs and natural fibre discs. If I have these tools with me on the construction site, I am ideally equipped for all cutting and grinding tasks and can carry them out quickly, precisely and efficiently."

Let's start with the CERABOND X cut-off wheel.

"Tyrolit describes the CERABOND X cut-off wheel as "the best cut-off wheel in the world." That's quite a statement. Of course, I haven't tested all the cut-off wheels on the market, but in terms of service life and cutting ability thanks to the self-sharpening ceramic grain, it seems far superior to many brands. If you work until the tool stops cutting, the CERABOND X cut-off wheel achieves around 25 % more cuts than comparable wheels from other premium manufacturers."

How do you explain this performance?

"Many conventional cut-off wheels can often only be used really well on the outer edge. After a short time, they only cut with difficulty, it takes longer and longer, and you have to use a new wheel. It may be enough for a few cuts, but even if such discs are cheaper than CERABOND X, they are not worth it. Many craftsmen use one-euro discs, but hardly pay attention to how many they use in total and ultimately have to dispose of. Even one euro is too much for one or two cuts. The CERABOND X cut-off wheel is extremely fast, can be guided perfectly with little effort and works without the slightest runout. It delivers precise, straight cuts and lasts long time, delivering the same performance. The short cutting times save me a lot of time and the precision means that hardly any reworking is required."

What work is typically involved?

"We manufacture and install stair railings, handrails and window grilles made of steel and stainless steel. Pipes, including solid pipes, have to be cut precisely and straight, and reworking should be kept to a minimum. Efficient work is extremely important today, because good skilled workers are hard to find and poor workmanship costs time and money."

How do you rate the packaging?

"The cut-off wheel is supplied in a box made of PCR plastic (recycled material). It is extremely well sealed and protects against UV light and moisture. This allows me to store the cut-off wheels properly without compromising their performance."

When is the CERABOND X grinding wheel used?

"The CERABOND X grinding wheel is designed for hard surfaces made of steel and stainless steel and is ideal for edge and surface grinding as well as for removing weld seams. This is essential in steel and metal construction as well as in bridge and shipbuilding. In steel construction in particular, chamfers have to be created and then welded together. Tyrolit recommends a thickness of four millimetres for peripheral grinding and seven millimetres for rough grinding. Only condition: a powerful angle grinder."

How does the rough grinding wheel work in practice?

"Rough grinding wheels should quickly remove material with a large chip volume. This is exactly what the CERABOND X rough grinding wheel does impressively: thanks to the new bond system with ceramic grain, it aggressively machines solid weld seams throughout and has no problems when chamfering stable, thick-walled pipes. Edge grinding and surface grinding are carried out very quickly with a high removal rate. Advantages: long service life, fewer wheel changes."

How do you rate the price and service life?

"We haven't carried out any long-term tests, but the wheel is extremely robust and stable - that suggests a very long service life. Of course, this quality has its price, but given the performance, it's worth it."

When do you use the CERABOND X fibre disc?

"The CERABOND X fibre disc with grit sizes from 24 to 60 is suitable for coarse grinding work as well as for rust removal and deburring of steel and stainless steel. With grit size 80, it also works excellently on galvanised pipes: The zinc coating is removed in no time at all. This is important as all zinc and rust must be removed before welding in order to achieve clean seams. Thanks to the cooling layer, no heat is transferred into the material, which also extends the lifetime of the disc."

Last but not least, the natural fibre disc – your impression?

"A really great disc, also visually thanks to its purple-colored surface. For finer stainless steel treatments, I would always recommend the CERABOND X natural fibre disc. It is harder than the red fibre disc and can therefore also be used without a backing pad. It is nice and thin and at the same time extremely stable, so you can work precisely in corners - ideal for fillet welds and smaller weld seams."

Your final conclusion?

"I can always rely 100% on the CERABOND X discs in my day-to-day work. They are incredibly enjoyable to work with and they help me save time and money."
