Tyrolit honing tools are used wherever precision in the micrometre range is crucial to the success of a process. Honing and grinding are both material-removing precision finishing processes, but differ fundamentally in terms of engagement and result. In grinding, the tool rotates at a high cutting speed; in honing, the honing stone or honing bar performs short, oscillating strokes with lower contact pressure. The result: honing achieves a more uniform surface finish with defined cross-grit patterns and greater dimensional accuracy – ideal for bores, raceways and joint surfaces where surface roughness depth and dimensional tolerance must be within the single-micrometre range. Grinding, on the other hand, removes more material in a shorter time, but is less suitable than subsequent honing for the most demanding surface finish requirements.
The three tool shapes cover different honing processes. Honing stones and vibrating stones are used in long-stroke bore honing and vibratory grinding – typically for bearing components, cylinder bores and components with high requirements in terms of surface finish and geometry. They are available in conventional designs using corundum or silicon carbide, as well as with superabrasives (diamond, CBN). Honing bars are used primarily in short-stroke honing (superfinishing), for example on roller bearing rings or camshafts. Hon rings are used for ball machining, for example in the precision machining of ceramic or steel hip and knee joints in the medical technology sector.

In the bearing industry honing stones are used for bearing rings, cylindrical rollers and tapered rollers made of steel and HSS. The automotive industry benefits from belt superfinishing for crankshafts and camshafts as well as turbocharger components. In the medical technology ceramically bonded diamond honing tools and CBN tools are used for the wet machining of ceramic and steel implants – including ceramic hip and knee joint balls, as well as cobalt-chromium and titanium alloys. The thermal glass industry relies on elastically bonded grinding tools to remove metal coatings from insulating glass units. The choice of abrasive depends on the material to be machined and the required surface finish. Conventional abrasives based on corundum (aluminium oxide) or silicon carbide, these cover the standard range – they are the cost-effective choice for steel, HSS and similar materials where surface finish requirements are moderate. CBN (cubic boron nitride) is suitable for hardened steels and alloys that require a long service life whilst maintaining a fine surface finish – for example, hip joint balls made from cobalt-chromium and titanium alloys. Diamond is used when machining the hardest materials, such as technical ceramics or cemented carbide, and achieves the highest surface finishes required by the medical technology sector for ceramic joint implants.
