Choosing the right abrasive belt depends primarily on the type of machine.
Stationary bench belt sanders are used in manufacturing plants and workshops to process large workpiece surfaces at high throughput. The large-format CERABOND X belts and zirconium strips in the dimensions 75×2000 mm and 150×2000 mm.
Portable belt sanders offer flexibility for working in hard-to-reach areas, during maintenance work or for smaller grinding projects. The Tyrolit range includes belts in the standard sizes 75×533 mm and 100×610 mm, including the universal BASIC belts based on aluminium oxide.
Mini belt sander are used for contour and profile grinding, deburring and finishing of precision parts — particularly in the cutlery industry and in the machining of tubes, bores and profiles. The Miniband range extends from 6×610 mm to 20×520 mm and is available with both ceramic grain (CERABOND) and zirconium corundum.
Material suitability varies between product lines — here are the key classifications:
Steel and stainless steel: CERABOND X belts (CA-P94) with ceramic grit are the highest-performance choice for normal and hard steels as well as stainless steel. Zirconium belts from the ZA-P48 range are also suitable for steel and stainless steel, particularly in dry applications with high contact pressure.
Steel and non-ferrous metals: ZA-P41 and ZA-P43 belts are suitable for use on steel, aluminium, copper, brass and other non-ferrous metals. ZA-P41 is also suitable for wet applications using oil, emulsion or water.
Steel, stainless steel and titanium (mini belt sander): Ceramic mini belts (CA-P92) and zirconium mini belts (ZA-P47) are designed for mini belt sanders. The ZA-P47 is also suitable for cast iron.
Chromium, cobalt, nickel, stainless steel alloys and titanium (fine grinding): TRINE belts have been specially developed for these demanding materials — for deburring, chamfering, fine grinding and finishing, both dry and wet.
Versatile use (metal and wood): BASIC belts based on aluminium oxide for portable hand grinders and mini belt sanders — a cost-effective choice for everyday use on a variety of materials.

For non-standard dimensions not included in the standard range, Tyrolit offers bespoke abrasive belts — tailored to the specific belt grinder.
The grit size determines whether an abrasive belt is designed for coarse material removal or for a fine surface finish. As a guide:
K24 to K40 — maximum material removal rate: For rough grinding, when a large amount of material needs to be removed in a short time. Recommended for CERABOND X and zirconium belts as the first stage of processing.
K60 to K80 — Surface finish: For a uniform, clean finish following rough grinding. Well suited to steel and stainless steel when a specific surface finish is required.
K100 to K120 — Fine grinding: For fine machining, intermediate grinding and demanding surfaces. TRINE belts, with grit sizes ranging from A6 to A100 (in accordance with the FEPA-P micro-grain standard), deliver exceptionally fine finishes.
Within a product range, it is advisable to start with a coarser grit and gradually move on to finer grades in order to save machining time and avoid surface defects.
CERABOND X belts (CA-P94) are the highest-performance range in the Tyrolit abrasive belt range. The self-sharpening ceramic grain delivers consistently high material removal on steel and stainless steel throughout its entire service life — whilst ensuring the coolest grinding process and lower contact pressure than with conventional abrasive belts. Available in 75×2000 mm and 150×2000 mm, grit sizes K24 to K80.
TRINE belts offer a finer finish than conventional abrasives on a backing and are specially developed for chromium, cobalt, nickel, stainless steel alloys and titanium. Their self-sharpening properties ensure consistently smooth surfaces — in both dry and wet applications. Available in several sizes ranging from 13×457 mm to 100×289 mm.
Zirconium abrasive belts (ZA-P41, ZA-P43, ZA-P48) are the robust, all-round choice for steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous metals. Hard zirconia corundum with an active coolant layer in the bond makes them particularly durable and suitable for high contact pressures and wet applications.

The service life of an abrasive belt depends on three factors: grit type, bonding and backing fabric.
To optimise tool life, select a grit size suited to the task (not too fine for heavy-duty removal) and use the recommended machine settings for the respective belt type.
